Red cup of tea

A Tea to detox your body and mind

3–4 minutes

The period right after the full moon, the waning moon, is from a traditional healing perspective always a ritualistically magical time to detox our body and cleanse out our mind. Releasing the old in form of toxins stuck in our body, calming the thoughts and sweeping out old beliefs or habitual thoughts about who we thought we were, can in general have stunningly revitalising effects on our spirit, overall well-being and a sense of purpose.

So here comes a recipe to detox your body and mind.

It’s best to stay with this herbal mix for two weeks to allow the ingredients to unfold their potential. Use water with a temperature of around 75 °C (certainly not boiling). Leave the tea to steep for 10mins.

In my 0,25l pot, I mix:

– 1 teaspoon of Nettle (detox the body, clear kidneys and urinary tract, increase overall vitality – Nettle is a traditional classic which is recommendable in times of stress or recovery, as a vitalisier to our body after physical exercise or often used as a cleansing treatment to our urinal tract. It’s furthermore said to relief symptoms of arthritis and joint pains. Some traditions also claim beneficial effects to our hair vitality and a revitalising effect to our skin.)

– 1 teaspoon of Dandelion (detox the body, particularly liver and boost metabolism, supports a cleansing of the skin – Dandelion is applied to relief skin issues such as acne or eczema and commonly used in liver-gallbladder treatments, furthermore said to help relief rheumatic issues. It’s former botanical name Taraxacum officinale testifies a long history of usage in a public pharmaceutical context.)

– 1 teaspoon of Lemon Balm or Melissa Officinalis (to relax our senses and rewrite the mindset – Lemon Balm is one of the plants used to support our nervous system and psyche. It relieves symptoms of anxiety, stress, migraine and supports our sleep due to its sedative effect. Lemon Balm is also applied to help remedy feelings of sensory overload and gastrointestinal issues due to stress.)

– 1 teaspoon of Camomile (calming and restoring to body, mind, hair and skin – Camomile has a traditional reputation as a plant to support us when we want to break bad habits.)

– some fresh juice of a Lemon (I added Lemon here to enhance the flavour as well as our immune system. In this recipe, I went into a bit more detail on some of the health benefits of Lemons. Vitamin C furthermore helps our body activate some of the healing properties of other ingredients.)

– 1 teaspoon of raw Honey (for its sweetening effect as well as anti-inflammatory health benefits. I also use it here to soothe the voice and throat.)

A treatment can unfold best if we have one cup of tea three times a day. While it’s easy to prepare at home, I understand that it might be a bit tricky to mix all the herbs at work. That’s why I decided to simply order a chunk of empty tea bags for such occasions. It’s also a good idea if you’d like to share herbal tea mixes with friends or loved ones who aren’t really prone to get multiple packs of herbs and mix them, just to enjoy a cup of tea. Like that, it’s suddenly easy to get people, who’d otherwise at best stick to a readymade tea bag, to benefit from the enormous difference a fresh herbal tea makes in smell, flavour and health benefits.

Please note: As with all things in life, some things will have ripple effects and the amounts make the difference. So please don’t overdose herbal teas either. Especially if you are on medication, suffer a medical condition, are prone to allergic reactions and during pregnancy it’s recommended to seek medical advisory before starting any self medication.
