BetterMe – A Tea to keep those New Year’s resolutions

4–7 minutes

New Year, New Start, New…resolutions…while some of us have given up on making extensive or even any kind of lists on all the things that we want to change or start in the new year ahead, others keep them and aim to use this fresh motivated moment in time for a new outlook, revamp some routines or let go of unhealthy habits, look into a new healthcare regime and tweak the diet for weight-loss, exercise more or simply start a new project.

I am indeed a fan of New Year’s resolutions and studies have shown that momentum is our greatest ally when it comes to implementing change or starting anew.

To a certain extend, all of us have encountered addictive or simply recurring patterns holding us back from creating the life we would actually desire that easily make it amongst the New Year’s resolutions – each year once again :). May it be substances like coffee, cigarettes, marijuana or alcohol, overeating, obsessive thinking or overworking. I’d even put procrastinating and binch watching TV shows all weekend on my list of recurring personal rather short sided joy. Instead of reading that book, going to the gym, drawing or writing my own stories, rather starring blankly at the tele after work or deciding to spontaneously ring up friends for drinks. I’ll do it all tomorrow. The tomorrow that never came :).

Often we are in need to rewrite deeply engrained patterns of behaviour, self image and thought. The tea mix below will also support you in cutting lose from any of the above, providing a bit of ease and joy to heart, mind and soul.

Let’s make 2023 a personal success! Don’t listen to the naysayers inside or outside and let this powerful tea combo help stay on track and keep those New Year’s resolutions.

A powerful herbal tea combo to keep those New Year’s resolutions and break free from outworn patterns.

In my 0,25l pot of tea, I mix:

  • 1 teaspoon of Valerian
  • 1 teaspoon of Camomile
  • 1 teaspoon of Nettle
  • 1 teaspoon of dried, crushed Rose pedals

Use hot water, not boiling. Make sure you cover the tea while it’s steeping. Leave to steep for 8 – 10 min.

This tea mix is wonderful to use for up to two weeks in order to support you through times of initial change, but also adds renewed motivation in case you find yourself slipping back a few months down the line.

Have one tea in the morning, one tea in the afternoon or early evening.

What’s it about these ingredients?

Valerian or Valeriana officinalis is one of the plants that we would have found in the herbal pharmacies at least since medieval times. It was said to be magical – its strong scent repelling everything evil, everything not benevolent to us. Nowadays, Valerian is still known by most of us as a stress and anxiety remedy, and a plant that cats love. It’s said to reorder our subconscious mind, relief us from nightmares and ground fuzzy thoughts back onto the earthly planes. Valerian is furthermore used to relief withdrawal symptoms which is why it can be recommendable when aiming to give up on addictions.

Nettle or Urtica dioica is a plant to detox our body via our kidneys. It’s particularly rich in minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, silica, unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin A, C, K. I am using the plant in this tea for two reasons: it’s worth cleansing out any toxins from our body at this point AND it makes a great rejuvenating treatment for our skin, nails and hair. Especially combined with Camomile, you will start to feel cleansed with a skin showing a healthy glow. You can also try this detox tea instead if you are purely looking for a rejuvenating cleanse: “A Tea to detox your body and mind”.

Camomile or Matricaria recutita L. is one of the classics when it comes to calming us down without necessarily making us tired. For some traditional healers, it’s still the plant they would use when supporting us to break bad habits such as smoking. It has however a variety of calming and soothing effects to our body as such improving our gut health in case of inflammation. Furthermore, the plant supports the health of our mucus membranes for example as a remedy to our gum. Camomile is antibacterial and antiviral and was classically often used as a herbal remedy to many issues of our skin.

Rose or Rosa damascena is not only another plant with healing and calming effects on our nervous system, she is said to enhance inner peace and harmony, remedy hurt feelings, revitalise our life force energy and make us feel more dynamic.

Why not add an affirmation or a powerful and positive song to your tea ritual?

Affirmations, or simply playing a reaffirming song, can act as motivating force and relief to us in moments where personal strength and a positive outlook are required. I believe that we can always find our own affirmations. Connected to the energy of a loving new start, I feel that this is can be a nice example to apply while high-fiving yourself in the mirror a la Mel Robbins (really I think her idea is awesome) and, of course, while enjoying a wonderful cup of healing herbal tea:

“I am not my mistakes. There is no need to look back at who I was yesterday. There is no need to compare myself to others as I am neither worse nor better. I am a unique and powerful soul. I am.

In this sense: wishing you a glorious, magical and happy start into the New Year, 2023 🙂

Ps: we have recently compiled a little recipe compendium for you that you can now download for free.

Please note: As with all things in life, some things will have ripple effects and the amounts make the difference. So please don’t overdose herbal teas either. It’s always advisable to observe how your body reacts to a herbal remedy in order to potentially amend amounts or swap to different herbs or even use similar ready made compilations in pill form as available in many pharmacies. Especially if you are on medication, suffer a medical condition, are prone to allergic reactions and during pregnancy it’s recommended to seek medical advisory before starting any self medication.
