I like this time of the year. When it gets cold outside and dark and there is no better excuse than to snuggle up on the sofa, warming myself on a cup of tea and taking a breather. After a blissfull summer with many sunny days spent outside, our minds and bodies get accustomed again to less sunlight and colder temperatures. When the leaves display a firework of colours before falling off, autumn is a time to pause and reflect as well as letting go, welcoming a new season with open arms.
It is also the time of the year where virus infections, colds and flues start to peak. If you‘ve got one, your life is just that little bit extra off and thrown of balance. Thankfully nature itself has some special magical-like ingredients available that boost our immune system, making us more resistant to the bacteria and viruses surrounding us, while warming our bodies from the inside.
It is at that time of the year when my ginger turmeric shots become a staple in my weekly meal plan. Both ingredients support you to keep the colds at bay, or if you already caught one, to recover faster from it. This shot is a great addition to the herbal teas Lina introduced you to in her post “A Powerful Tea to remedy Cold or Flu & other herbal healers”.
The main ingredients for this health shot are ginger and tumeric. Both have been valued for its medicinal properties throughout the ages and have become staples in bigger supermarkets across Europe in recent years.
Both roots are known to have antiviral effects and potent anti-inflammatory qualities, making them your perfect side kick for the winter months. They also can reduce inflammation, relieve pain and reduce nausea. Though those effects are more likely to be observed if ginger and turmeric are taken regularly rather than on an ad-hoc basis as may be the case for when you have the flu.
Below you will find a recipe for about four shots, that should last you a couple of days if stored in the fridge or can be shared with your loved ones.
It is best to use a slow juicer for this recipe, but if you do not oppose a few pieces in your drink you can also use a good smoothie maker or blender.
