It’s astounding when you look closely at the ingrained drinking habits in many of our cultures. Movies and TV shows repeatedly emphasize that partying is synonymous with drinking, that a negative event or a layoff is synonymous with getting drunk, that dinner is synonymous with wine, and that relaxing with friends is synonymous with beer, wine or other bubbly alcoholic beverages. Without alcohol the marvellous Mrs. Maisel might have never discovered her life’s purpose as a comedian. We laugh at the stupid things people do or say in movies, sometimes with life-changing consequences, but is it funny, or do we underestimate the impact on our own behavior? We can also ask the other way around: why do we want to question something that has always been part of our culture, and what is the point of living if you don’t have fun doing it?
Especially in the early years of my career in media production, there were many get-togethers in the office. There were always a variety of reasons to either party or have late night get-togethers with dinner and alcoholic drinks as a reward, which characterized our week from Tuesday onwards. Most of the time, most of us were plagued by a small or large hangover the next morning, but we still had to master the day and deliver to our clients on time. Whatever your views on alcohol, wine and beer have had a legitimate place in herbal medicine since at least the Middle Ages and probably far beyond. Many of the recipes of the famous nun Hildegard von Bingen contain either wine or beer. Neither were quite as strong back then, but in any case, wine and beer can be considered beneficial to health in reasonable quantities. The quantity makes the poison, and I would be the wrong person to judge you for that “one” extra glass of wine. So in case you’ve had too much, here’s a natural but effective way to feel better the next day: a recipe for an anti-hangover tea that will get you through a hangover day at work or any other gray day :).
A Herbal Tea Hangover Remedy
In my 0,25 l pot of tea, I mix:
- one teaspoon of Dandelion
- one teaspoon of Nettle
- one teaspoon of Rosemary
- one teaspoon of Camomile
- one teaspoon of Aniseed
Brewed with boiling water and left to steep for 10-15min. Add one teaspoon of locally sourced raw Honey and a bit of fresh Lemon juice right before drinking.
All ingredients above contain a diverse set of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory minerals and vitamins that help our body heal from the intoxication of the previous night. A recipe that your friends or colleagues will certainly be grateful for when you serve them a cup of this tea on a hangover day at the office.
Dandelion: traditionally a plant that is certainly one of the most popular herbal remedies, as it is said to help detoxify the liver and rebalance our metabolism. In my personal experience, it is a magical remedy for hangovers, relieving the painful discomfort in the head and body. Check out my friend Corina’s post Herbal Salt – detoxifying powers of the dandelion for another wonderful way of using dandelion and read up on more information about our liver health and its restoration in Healthy Liver, Radiant Skin – A Detox Tea Recipe.
Nettle: another very traditional healing plant at least in Northern Europe, as it is said to revitalize our body, for example after sports. It detoxes the body via the kidneys and is therefore most commonly applied to assist with bladder and kidney issues. Nettle is also said to help us look a little younger and nurture hair and nails, which you can read more about in Naturally Nettlesome? A rejuvenating Tea treatment with anti-aging effects.
Rosemary: when you have a hangover, it can be difficult to get back to work with coffee as your stomach is easily irritated or your head hurts. In these cases, rosemary offers an excellent alternative to revitalize you, wake you up and focus your mind on the tasks at hand.
Camomile: added here to calm the stomach and release any feelings of stress.
Aniseed: often used to remedy stomach upsets, the plant is added to relax our stomach and also to regain some positive life force energy on this rather exhausting day. Find out more about the immense effects that our gut health has on our mental health and vice versa in Drowning in Bitterness? A Herb for Healthy Gut Feelings.
Honey: is antioxidant but here it’s the throat soothing quality that is meant to help your voice sound charming in conversations with your team, boss or clients.

Drink sensibly and take care :)!

Please note: As with all things in life, some things will have ripple effects and the amounts make the difference. So please don’t overdose herbal teas either. Especially if you are on medication, suffer a medical condition, are prone to allergic reactions and during pregnancy it’s recommended to seek medical advisory before starting any self medication.
