A New Year’s Cleanse or How Celery Can Boost Your Life

2–4 minutes

With the change of calendar years I often feel the need for a cleanse, particularly when my body no longer feels in harmony, unbalanced and just a little off. Then I take  a day or two of detox, to clear up my mind, body and spirit, to center myself again and embrace the things to come at work, at home, in life generally while being mindfull to my own needs and be greatfull for the little things filling my day.

Whenever I fast, detox or simply want to pause and give my body the time it deserves to rejuvinate, I turn to cellery juice. I don’t know about you, but I find cellery an acquired taste. It is a bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it. Well, for a long time I certainly wasn’t a fan, but I am now a converted believer – while I still am not a great fan of the taste – I do think that cellery should be named super vegetable of the year. Who knew that these little stems are almost magical for your body?

So let’s take a closer look into the super powers of celery.

Celery juice has anti-inflammatory properties that have been shown to be very effective for many ailments. It is highly alkaline and can help prevent many health conditions and it is also said to have a healing effect on digestive problems, is considered a gentle remedy for high blood pressure and rheumatic complaints. Studies have shown, that it can support the fight against breast cancer and pancreas cancer and it is also said to support treatment of autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto, a thyroid disease.

Celery is rich in vitamin B, vitamin C, E, K, iron, calcium and potassium, flavonoids, especially apigenin and luteolin. It is said to promote an alkaline environment in the intestine, therefore supporting a healthy gut, liver and kidneys.

In addition to antioxidant vitamins (e.g. vitamin C and beta-carotene), celery also contains significant amounts of polyphenols. These are secondary plant substances that also have a strong antioxidant effect, protecting the body from cell damage. Though, juicing celery eliminates the fiber content, one of the main benefits of the vegetable.

I recommend to drink one portion each morning on an empty stomach for three weeks, whereby the cycle can be repeated every few weeks. Feel free to take note of your changes you can observe and get in touch. We would love to hear about your experiences!

For the following recipe I rely on my slow juicer to get the maximum of juice while keeping heat development to a minimum.

Though if you prepare it as a smoothie, you may want too add more water. Alternatively you could also then drain the smoothie mix through a draincloth to catch the juices only.

For two portions (roughly 200-300 ml per day) use:

  • 1 Bunch of celery, depending on the stems’ thickness you may want to use two
  • 1 Lemon
  • Ice cubes

Once you have juiced the lemon and celery, add some ice to your glass and enjoy this littel treat.

Please note: As with all things in life, some things will have ripple effects and the amounts make the difference. So please don’t overdose on vegetable drinks. Especially if you are on medication, suffer a medical condition, are prone to allergic reactions and during pregnancy it’s recommended to seek medical advisory before starting any self medication.
